The Jardim Botânico Tropical sits in the privileged area of Belém, in Lisbon. With a total area of 6.7ha, it holds a relevant botanical collection of approximately 500 tropical and subtropical species. The garden, together with the Palácio de Belém, the President’s official residence, is classified as national monument. Initially it was a farmland that was transformed into the palace’s garden in the 19th century and evolved towards a garden-museum in the 20th century. Its restoration was promoted by the University of Lisbon and followed the methodological approach for historical and cultural heritage restoration.
